Amen, brother!

Courtesy of the Beliefnet Daily Jewish Wisdom email (I get the Daily Muslim Wisdom one, too), this statement about scripture study that just about peeled me like a grape. In the words of the immortal Meg Ryan, "Yes, yes, YES!!!"

The study of Torah is not simply a didactic act...It is a powerful experience involving the closeness of many generations, the joining of spirit to spirit and the connection of soul to soul.

That's so funny, but I loved the quote...makes me think of communion.

One of my most positive Bible study experiences -- and I admit to being a kvetchy and impatient Bible class participant -- is taking an online class in Torah with a "Conservative by nature, Reform by ordination" rabbi. Her way of engaging Scripture was so dynamic and even playful -- it completely bypassed both fundamentalist literalism and historical-critical deconstruction. It made me appreciate Scripture much more.
